Artist Statement: The Formal Materiality and Sensual Dialectics of Abstraction 8
In Abstraction 8, I explore the absolute purity of the act of painting as both a material and sensory practice. This work seeks to forge a dynamic equilibrium between the subtle rendering of oil layers and the intuitive capture of the stream of consciousness. Through this, it investigates the dialectical relationships among internal order, formal language, and emotional depth in abstract painting.
1. The Temporal Superposition of Thin Glazing and Rendering
On a formal level, I treat oil paint as a medium embedded with temporal depth and light. The cool-grey baseline that diffuses toward the edges of the canvas is a spiritual residue recomposed through countless sessions of meticulous rendering and thin glazing. This long, muted labor allows the pigments to retain a distinctive transparency through their layered accumulation, making it feel as if light can penetrate the very surface.
From the perspective of contemporary abstract aesthetics, the flow, permeation, and blurred boundaries of oil paint possess their own independent formal significance. Interweaving into mist-like, subtle gradations, the cool greys are no longer colors used merely to fill space. Instead, they are the solidified trajectories of intent left by diluted pigments breathing and spreading across the canvas. The irregular lines discard any concrete landscape narrative, yet they preserve the heavy tension of scenery projected onto the mind, allowing viewers to see through the material surface and perceive the emotional depth behind the colors.
2. Sensual Breakthrough and Color Recomposition within Formal Structure
In organizing the overall structure of the composition, I deliberately create an "internal order within instability." The dark, vertically plunging lines on the left join the slanting, azure block to construct a geometric space filled with a sense of compression and velocity. Amidst this cool and grey tonality, the deep, rich crimson mass at the bottom emerges as the most intense sensual breakthrough within an otherwise rigorous composition.
This red mass functions both like an inner core with body temperature and a sealed material of memory. Breathing through the crevices of the layered oil paint, it anchors the visual gravity of the entire canvas. In contrast, the accents of orange and green are precisely placed in the upper right. Breaking the monotony of the cool tones in terms of color theory, these two small, high-luminosity blocks act conceptually as a form of precise accident. Like faint glimmers suspended in the cavity of memory, they form an invisible yet taut line of visual tension with the crimson mass, reassembling the internal structure of the painting.
I offer no elaborate narratives. The varying tension of the brushstrokes, the permeation of colors, and the thin glazing and layering of pigments are all intended to make this canvas an open sensory medium. When the gazes of viewers and collectors meet these textures of oil paint, I hope they can transcend the limitations of language—directly shaping their own inner resonance within these hidden yet profound emotional tensions. This is not a painting to be "understood," but a spiritual sanctuary where one can settle their inner state of mind.
