Artist Statement: The Color Gradations and Sensuous Perception of Ascension 2
In the practice of contemporary painting, exploring how pure visual forms can transcend vision itself to touch the inner experience of the viewer has long been my core creative focus. In the artwork Ascension 2 (100x72.5cm, oil on canvas, 2015), I attempt to suspend all figurative narratives and symbols, reducing the painting to a spiritual space co-constructed by "color gradations" and "materiality of the medium." This piece does not adhere to any transcendental religious allegories; instead, it focuses on the emotional depth that color, light, shadow, and texture can open up within a two-dimensional canvas.
From the perspective of visual formal structure, this painting is built upon a horizontal overlay of color strata. Within the logic of chromatics and optics, color inherently possesses psychological implications of weight and space. The deep blues and ultramarines at the bottom of the canvas, through layers of low-brightness and high-saturation stacking, condense into a material foundation akin to the deep sea or a night shroud. This steady, cool palette functions formally as the "gravitational anchor" of the composition. It bears the viewer's initial visual point of impact and subtly metaphors a certain inescapable stagnation and heaviness within lived reality.
However, as the eye gradually progresses upward with the color strata, the spatial relationships within the frame undergo a subtle qualitative shift. The cool tones interlace and permeate with fragmented warm strata of orange-yellow and ochre, forming a tonal "transition zone." In color structure theory, the boundary between these contrasting colors is not a conflict, but a flow of visual tension. By repeatedly overlaying, scraping, and washing the oil paint on the canvas, I intentionally left behind the brushwork traces of time. These fluid textures transform "ascension" from a mere physical spatial displacement into a sensuous process where color visually sheds its weight and liberates itself toward the light.
Near the top of the canvas, the drifting, faintly shimmering circular color blocks serve as the subtle spiritual close-ups of this artwork. Rather than representations of objective realities, they are spontaneous projections of light onto the boundaries of the mind. From the standpoint of formal aesthetics, these irregular green and yellow pinpricks of light break up the regularity of the horizontal color layers, injecting a sense of respiration into the painting. They resemble glimmers rippling across a tranquil ocean, or emotional ripples occasionally swelling from deep within. Instead of passively waiting to be observed, these color shapes act as a visual medium, guiding the viewer’s gaze through the thickness of the color strata, drifting gently toward the faint white light at the summit.
As a medium endowed with ductility and a sense of time, oil paint records every breath and brushstroke of my body during the creative process. In Ascension 2, those unblended, artisanal, and uncertain brushstrokes are the most intimate dialogue between myself and the canvas. This is an emotional ferry belonging purely to painting and the bodily senses.
It is my hope that when viewers face this accumulation of color and time, they can temporarily unburden themselves of daily rationality. As you pause here, gazing upon the fluid transition from profound blues to warm halos, may you resonate with the pure color fields through the distinct material depth of painting—and thereby experience, in some corner of your mind, a subtle, introspective, and highly individual spiritual "ascension."
